A 37-year-old aunt of four adorable young nieces, one of five sisters, a self-proclaimed “middle child,” and bargain hunter with a passion for fashion
Recently, I was hanging out with three of my nieces who are ages (almost) eight, six and (almost) four. I’m rounding up because a couple of them have birthdays coming up soon. I’m consistently amazed and often times very amused at what little girls say and do. Now that all are school age, I have begun to hear them talk about things they want because their friends have “it.” Whether it’s a cool new bracelet, glittery nail polish or a pink guitar, there is always a new must-have item. Colorful, glittery and pink seem to be reoccurring key words. J
Thinking back to being one of seven kids (five being girls!) as well as having to wear a school uniform for 12 years, being able to be your own person was often times a challenge. In the same breath however, I wanted to be just like my friends (and older sister of course). There was that constant struggle to fit in yet stand out. When I spend time with my nieces today, it’s apparent that the same holds true. Many things have changed since I was a tween back in the early to mid 1980s, one being that the word “tween” probably didn’t even exist yet. However, the want and need to express yourself sure did, and I believe that it will always remain no matter what age you are.
My mom would have loved the idea of allowing us to express ourselves without having to spend a ton of money to do so. The expense of buying new clothes each time a new a trend rolled around or when we’d grow an inch or two could add up quickly. That’s what I think is so fabulous about Snapparel! Their interchangeable, removable and decorative products solve two issues at once…allowing little girls and tweens like my nieces to express their own sense of style yet keeping their parents’ shopping headaches to a minimum.
